Q1. What is the largest installation on which the program has been tested?

We have tested the install in networks that contain a mix of NT Server/Wk and Win2000. The largest server consisted of three 600MHz CPUs, 22GB of disk and 512MB of RAM. This machine has more than 1 million objects in the tree including files and registry items.

Q2. What known limitations exist?

The following known limitations exist in this version of the product:

In certain cases, the progress bar display is incorrect.

The Enterprise edition support only NT networks that use Domain Authentication.

Limited support for Win98 systems in the Enterprise edition (Win98 does not truly support the concept of services).

Q3. When a personal firewall is used such as ZoneAlarm, uninstalling the program causes the uninstaller to request network access. Why is this necessary and can it be avoided?

This is something that was done to maintain consistency between all the Windows platforms. Uninstall sends a msg to the WhatChanged® service to stop and since Win 98 does not have services, background program cannot be treated as service. This message being sent is causing the request for network access.

Q4. How can I uninstall the program?

There are 2 parts in uninstalling WCW, firstly uninstallation of Agents and secondly uninstallation of the WCW Console.

The WCW Agents can be uninstalled from the Client Manager that is available as part of the WCW Console. The WCW Agents that were manually installed can also be manually uninstalled from the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs applet.

The WCW Console has to be uninstalled from the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs applet.

It is advised that all linked WCW Agents be uninstalled before uninstalling the WCW Console.

All programs components will be removed but an option is provided to retain snapshot data, Configuration data and the backend database. You may choose to retain or delete them. Some components (DLL) may be in use by Windows at the time of uninstallation and will be deleted on the next system reboot.

Q5. What planning is necessary prior to installing the Enterprise edition?

Before an Enterprise install:

Ensure all participating machines are part of an NT domain (it is not necessary that they all be in the same domain). Each machine should have 40Mb free disk space, be one of NT, XP, 98 or 2000 and have 64MB RAM. TCP/IP support is required. NT systems should be at SP3 or higher and have IE4 or higher.

Choose a login account, which will be used by the program to write snapshot data. This account should have Domain Admin privileges. For clarity, it is recommended that you create a special account called "WCAdmin" for this purpose.

Q6. Can I restore the complete system registry from a previous snapshot?

This feature allows you to select a previously taken Snapshot of your system and return your system to that (registry) configuration. The entire registry is restored. Single keys may be restored via the Restore Registry Key feature. This feature should be used with care since it may potentially damage a working system. An Undo registry restore feature is also available.

Only users with Admin privileges may perform this operation. This feature is accessed via Options|Registry Restore.

Q7. Can I restore a single registry key from a previous snapshot?

You may use this feature to restore a selected registry key from previous snapshot. The key value is restored to its previous contents. This feature is accessed via Options|Registry Restore Key

Only users with Admin privileges may perform this operation.

Q8. Can I undo Registry Restore?

If you change your mind about the Restore Registry operation you just performed, you can back out those changes with this feature. This feature is accessed via the Options|Undo Registry Restore menu.

Only user with Admin privileges can perform this operation.

Q9. Some directories and registry keys change constantly (such as cache/cookies) and I am not interested in these changes. Can I filter them out?

You may wish to avoid taking snapshots of frequently changing directories (such as the browser cache) or registry entries.

To exclude a directory or registry item from future snapshot, select the folder/key, right click and select filter.

The existing list of filtered items can be viewed and modified by the Options|Global Configuration menus, Filter tab.

Q10. Having previously selected an item to be filtered, how can I choose to see the changes again?

Right clicking the folder or registry item and choosing the correct option can defeat filtering of a folder or registry item. This can also be done by unselecting the item from the Options|Global Configuration menus, Filter tab.

Q11. How can I get a detailed Report of changes between two snapshots?
Use the Report button to create a detailed comparison between two Snapshots. The report can be either printed or viewed online.
Q12. Can I make my configurations on the WCW Console system and then apply it to all the WCW Agents?

Yes. After setting up all the configuration options on the WCW Console system, select the Options|Apply Configuration menu to apply the Console's configuration to all linked WCW Agents.
